In 1974, Mel Brooks directed the funniest horror film ever made: Young Frankenstein, shot in glowing black and white as a loving parody of the classic Universal monster pictures. It gave the world a doctor who insists it is pronounced ‘Fronkensteen,’ a hunchbacked assistant who insists it is pronounced ‘Eye-gor,’ and a monster who sings and dances in white tie and tails. This then-and-now tribute follows the three stars of Young Frankenstein: Gene Wilder (1933–2016), the Milwaukee boy who became Willy Wonka and wrote the film himself from just two pages; Marty Feldman (1934–1982), the googly-eyed English genius who improvised Igor into immortality; and Peter Boyle (1935–2006), the former monk turned volcanic actor who played the monster absolutely straight — and made him hilarious. From Wilder’s non-negotiable demand for black and white, to the Oscar-nominated screenplay he wrote with Brooks, to the lines the world still quotes fifty years later — this is the full story of the cast of Young Frankenstein, then and now.
Rest in peace: Gene Wilder (1933–2016), Marty Feldman (1934–1982), Peter Boyle (1935–2006).
