Scientists Compared Nepali DNA With Indian and Tibetans— One Result Shocked Everyone

What does Nepali DNA reveal when scientists compare it with populations from India and Tibet? Genetic research across the Himalayan region has uncovered a surprisingly complex history of migration, isolation, and ancestry. One major genome-wide study analyzed 738 individuals from 49 Himalayan populations, including populations from Nepal, North India, Bhutan, and Tibet, using more than 500,000 genetic markers. The results showed that Nepalese populations generally occupy a genetic position between South Asian and East Asian populations, while different Nepalese ethnic groups carry very different proportions of these ancestral components. Other research involving more than 1,200 individuals found that Nepalese populations can show varying levels of Tibetan and Indian ancestry. Sherpa populations, for example, cluster much closer to Tibetans, while other Nepalese groups show stronger southern Himalayan connections.
