China’s Xiaolangdi Dam faces a problem most dams cannot solve simply by holding back water: the Yellow River carries enormous quantities of sediment. In this engineering documentary, we explore how the Xiaolangdi Water Control Project uses reservoir storage, low-level outlets and controlled water–sediment regulation releases to influence where that sediment settles, when it moves, and how the lower Yellow River responds. The project’s main rockfill dam rises about 154 meters and supports roughly 1,800 MW of installed hydropower capacity. But its most unusual engineering challenge is hidden below the waterline. Since the early 2000s, controlled releases have been used to create flow conditions capable of scouring deposited sediment and moving part of it downstream. This is not a story about permanently “taming” the Yellow River.
