Pastor Chris Meads begins a new study through Galatians by laying the foundation for what it means to live the lifestyle of Jesus. The Christian life is not primarily about fulfilling obligations, following rules, or modifying our behavior. It is about the life of Christ being expressed through us. Before we can talk about how Christians live, however, we have to be firmly rooted in the gospel that gives us life in the first place. In Galatians 1:1-10, Paul writes to churches that are in danger of abandoning the true gospel. False teachers are questioning Paul's authority and promoting a message that adds human effort to the work of Christ. Paul responds with urgency because there is only one gospel. Jesus does not do His part while we do ours in order to earn salvation. Jesus Christ gives Himself for our sins and delivers us from this present evil age. We need an all-sufficient Savior because we cannot make ourselves right with God. This gospel is the foundation of the entire Christian life. We are loved and called by Christ, not because of what we bring to the table, but because of who He is. The Son gives Himself for us, the Father gives His Son, and God receives the glory. Jesus not only saves us from the penalty of sin, but also delivers us from a world that is constantly trying to shape us into its mold. Paul warns that stepping away from the sufficiency of Christ is not a small theological mistake. A "Jesus plus" gospel is a different gospel that cannot save. That is why followers of Jesus must know the gospel, remain rooted in it, and refuse to compromise it for the approval of others. Loving people means being willing to speak the truth about Jesus, even when that truth is difficult. As GracePoint begins a season focused on the lifestyle of Jesus, Pastor Chris challenges the church to start here: insist on nothing short of the true gospel of Jesus Christ. Our lives should not simply be marked by doing Christian things, but by becoming Christ-dependent, Christ-proclaiming disciples who speak the truth in love and help others find the way of Christ.
