The 4 Upāyas of Kashmir Shaivism: Do You Choose The Pathway, or Does The Pathway Choose You? Q & A: A response to a question by ‪@Ether0726‬ In the meditation tradition of Kashmir Shaivism, an upāya is a "means" or a practical pathway home to Consciousness. Each upāya is a "pathway" that helps us move from our limited, everyday sense of self into the expansive clarity of universal Consciousness. But with different pathways available, how do we know where to begin? And more importantly, do we choose the pathway, or does the pathway choose us? In this video, we explore the upāyas as mystical yet practical pathways of Trika philosophy. Systematized by the great master Abhinavagupta, the upāyas show us how to enter Non-Dual Consciousness or Shiva. In this video, I will explain the upāyas in terms we can all easily understand and apply to our modern lives. A Note on the Viewing Experience: In keeping with the ancient Tantric oral tradition, there are no subtitles or captions provided for this video. This is an invitation to step away from simply reading text on a screen, and instead, practice receiving the spoken teaching with your entire body and intuitive awareness. The Four Pathways: Path Name (with Diacritics) | Meaning | Focus of Practice | Āṇavopāya | The Means of Action | Entering Consciousness by using the breath, body, senses, and formal meditation. | Śāktopāya | The Means of Knowledge | Working directly with the mind, using pure contemplation to dissolve dualistic thoughts and enter Consciousness. | Śāmbhavopāya | The Means of Will | Entering into our natural state of Consciousness through immediate, silent awareness. | Anupāya | The Methodless Path | The effortless, instant recognition of your own true nature. | The Core Question: Do We Choose The Path Or Does The Path Choose Us? We also explore one of the most beautiful mysteries of this tradition: Do you choose the upāya or does the upāya choose you? We will explore Śaktipāta (the descent of grace) and how your own spiritual readiness, or adhikāra, acts like a natural magnet for grace. You will discover why you don't need to force yourself into a practice that doesn't fit—and how Consciousness naturally meets you exactly where you are. Whether you are deeply rooted in the Non-Dual practice of Kashmir Shaivism, or you are just beginning on this beautiful path, I hope this discussion brings clarity, and also opens up more questions for you!
