The group takes its name from a mountain in Israel. The band then consists of Johnny and Eppy Manahutu, Zeth Mustamu (percussion), Chris Latul (guitar) and Usje Sabander (bass). Soon Nino Latuny (guitar) and Frans Eschauzier (keyboards) are added to the group. 1975 During the second group presentation of music newspaper OOR in Paradiso, the band steals the show. Percussionist Neppy Noya joins the group. 1976 Noya leaves the band again. However, he still regularly plays as a guest musician. Massada is building an excellent live reputation and a loyal fan base. 1978 The debut album, Astaganaga, is released. The Santana-Esque record is quite weakly produced, but nevertheless quickly reaches gold. The single Latin Dance becomes a hit in the Netherlands. 1979 On the second album, Puykul Tifa, the Moluccan identity of the group comes to the fore. The album contains quite a lot of long instrumental parts. It can be concluded from the lyrics that the band members sympathize with the RMS ideal. The single Arumbai, written by Latul, reached the Top Ten. The album goes gold. Massada performs on average five times a week, receives a Hitkrant award, wins a Zilveren Harp from the Conamus Foundation, plays at Pinkpop and has a successful tour in Germany. Due to differences of opinion, the Manuhutus suddenly, completely unexpectedly, expel Latul, Eschauzier and Sabander from the band. They are replaced by Peter Kuyt (trumpet), Jan Stam (sax), Walter Sell (keyboards), Rudy de Queljoe (guitar) and Turu Leerdam (bass). The last two come from Vitesse. In this line-up, the group records the album Pusaka. 1980 Pusaka appears. The album features Sajang é, a song recorded with a women's and children's choir. The single is a number 1 hit and goes gold. 1981 Latuny will leave the group in June. Latul records a solo album with the help of Eschauzier, Sabander and Noya. Masada is going to set a new course. The album Baru (Malay for 'new life') has a funky latin sound. It is the first record on which no Malay is sung. 1986 The single Vahevala, a cover of a song by the American duo Loggins & Messina, appears, but does not get past the tip parade. After that, Masada performs sporadically. Offers from record companies are declined, because there is no new material available. The group members are each active in bands and projects. Percussionist Martino Latupeirissa releases the single Love Wave under the name Martino. 1999 After a fairly long period, Massada is again in the spotlight. Besides Johnny Manuhutu, the band is now formed by Jan Jermias (guitar, vocals), Justin (keyboards, vocals), Richard Tamaela (bass), Jopie Manuhutu (percussion), Dwight Muskita (percussion) and Njong Louhenapessy (drums, vocals). The group can be seen in the TV programs For the Change, TROS T.V. and The Plantation. Masada performs regularly in the country again. 2001 Rudy de Queljoe releases the EP Toma under his own name. Toma is an abbreviation for Tuhan Obor Maluku which stands for 'the torch has been given to the Moluccans'. The reason for the five-track record is the date March 21, 2001 on which it is exactly 50 years ago that the history of the Moluccan population in the Netherlands begins. The initiative for making Toma is the song Hele Hela Rotan É which was written in about 1915 by De Queljoe's grandfather Rudolf P. de Queljoe. In both composing and writing the title track, De Queljoe is guided by the book of Isaiah. 2004 In the summer, Massada will record a partly nostalgic live CD in De Graaf Wichman in Huizen for about 70 visitors. During the recording of the performance, the band consists of Johnny Manuhutu, Joop Manuhutu, Jan Jermias, James Sabandar, Steven van Gestel and Jan Peter Sträter. A DVD version of the record will also be released. During the presentation of the DVD on March 18 in Club Silverdome in Huizen, Alvin Manuhuwa makes his debut as the new drummer of the band. 2006 Massada gives two concerts in Indonesia as part of the Java International Jazz Festival in Jakarta, the largest three-day music festival in Asia and comparable to North Sea Jazz. During these performances, the band consists of Johnny Manuhutu (vocals), Nippy Noya (percussion), Joop Manuhutu (percussion), Alvin Manuhuwa (drums), Jan Jermias (guitar), Rudy de Queljoe (guitar), James Sabandar (bass guitar) and Wolfgang Roggenkamp (keys). 2009 The band is part of the Dutch Rock Nights tour through the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, together with New Adventures, Powerplay, Urban Heroes and Livin' Blues Xperience. The performances will be recorded in January.
