10 Ancient Ocean Animals Scientists Think Survived Into Modern Times In January of two thousand and seven, staff at Awashima Marine Park in Shizuoka, Japan received an unusual call from a local fisherman. He had pulled something up from the water near the Tagonoura harbour, something he could not identify, and he wanted someone to come and look at it. What arrived at the park that afternoon was a living creature roughly one and a half metres long, eel-shaped but unmistakably a shark, with six pairs of frilled gill slits running along its throat like the ruffled collar of some Victorian nightmare. The staff recognised it immediately, because photographs of dead specimens existed in the scientific literature. What they had never seen was one alive.
