Downton Abbey never existed. But the castle on screen is real, and so is the heiress whose money kept it standing.
In this documentary, we explore the true story behind Highclere Castle and the real-life Lady Almina, Countess of Carnarvon: an heiress of disputed parentage, a Rothschild-linked fortune, an earl who spent it excavating in Egypt, and the moment that made the Carnarvon name famous when Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered.
We separate the fictional Crawleys from real history, and look at how inheritance, death duties, World War I and a changing Britain broke apart so many aristocratic families. We also follow Almina's story from wartime hospital to bankruptcy.
Downton Abbey was fictional, but the social world it portrayed was inspired by real British aristocratic life.
