Downton Abbey never existed, but the world behind it was real. So who were the real aristocrats behind the show, and what did their lives look like when the cameras were off?
In this documentary, we separate fiction from history. We begin at Highclere Castle, the real home of the Earls of Carnarvon where Downton Abbey was filmed, and follow the story of the 5th Earl, his partnership with Howard Carter, the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, and his death in 1923. We also look at Lady Almina, the Rothschild-linked fortune behind Highclere, and her wartime hospital.
We then explore the real pressures that reshaped British aristocratic life: death duties, falling land rents, the losses of the First World War, the end of the old servant system, and the decline of the country house. We also look at the dollar princesses, including Consuelo Vanderbilt, and how the entail system in the show compares with real English property law.
This is the true story of old money, inheritance, and a world that changed forever.
