Can you find a bomb that works without setting it off? For a classical physicist, the answer is no: to know if the bomb works, you have to test it, and the test blows it up. But in 1993, two physicists proved that quantum mechanics can do it. A bomb can reveal itself without any light ever touching it.
In this video we follow the investigation step by step, using the Feynman method: simple images, everyday comparisons, and no complicated equations.
🔎 What you will learn:
The ultra-sensitive bomb problem: why classical physics says it is impossible
Waves, superposition, and the double-slit experiment (Feynman's "only mystery")
The Mach-Zehnder interferometer and the "dark detector"
The Elitzur-Vaidman bomb tester (1993): the three possible outcomes (1/2 explosion, 1/4 inconclusive, 1/4 bomb found intact)
Why a click on the dark detector proves the bomb works, without any photon touching it
Why you can save about 1 bomb in 3 by repeating the test
The quantum Zeno effect: how to reach almost 100% (about 97.6% with 100 steps)
Real experiments (Kwiat, Zeilinger and others) and the idea of interaction-free imaging
The debate: is it really "interaction-free"? (Vaidman's many-worlds view)
What it does not prove: no telepathy, no free lunch, no faster-than-light signals
