Why does your brain keep replaying the past, rehearsing the future and returning to the same thoughts over and over again?
One piece of the answer may involve the default mode network, or DMN, a group of interconnected brain regions involved in self-referential thinking, autobiographical memory, mental time travel and rumination.
Let's explore the neuroscience of the default mode network, why patterns of DMN activity have been associated with depressive rumination, what meditation research teaches us about reducing self-focused mental looping and how psychedelics such as psilocybin can temporarily disrupt rigid patterns of network activity and connectivity.
We'll also look at the part that often gets overlooked: what happens after the insight. Neuroplasticity may create an opening, but the nervous system still needs repeated experiences that support new predictions and new patterns.
From a Neurosomatic Intelligence perspective, practices involving vision, vestibular input, proprioception, interoception and other sensory systems can give the brain new information in everyday life, without waiting for an altered state.
