Do We Really Want What We Deserve?

“That’s not fair!” As we discovered last Sunday, somewhere inside us is a scorecard that keeps track of who worked harder, who received more, and who got something they didn’t deserve. This Sunday, Jesus challenges our view of scorecards again with His parable of the workers in the vineyard in Matthew 20:1–16. Some work all day. Others work only an hour. Yet at the end of the day, the master gives them the same wage. We value fairness but do we really want God to give us exactly what we deserve? The Gospel offers grace. At the cross, Jesus receives what our sins deserve, and we receive what He has earned: forgiveness, life, salvation, and an eternal inheritance we could never earn for ourselves.
