In the summer of 1518, a woman stepped out of her front door in Strasbourg… and began to dance. There was no music. No celebration. And she could not stop.
Within weeks, dozens of people were dancing in the streets — some later accounts say hundreds. The city's doctors prescribed more dancing as the cure. It only made things worse.
This is the true story of the Dancing Plague of 1518 — what happened, how the city tried to stop it, and what historians think really caused it.

📌 ABOUT THIS STORY
The Dancing Plague really happened, in Strasbourg in July–September 1518. Estimates of how many people danced range from about 50 to 400. Chronicles written years later say some dancers died, but the records kept at the time don't confirm it, so the number of deaths is unknown. Noah and Maya, the two travellers, are fictional characters who frame the story.
Most historians today think it was a case of mass psychogenic illness: after years of famine, disease and fear, and a strong belief in Saint Vitus's curse, people's minds and bodies reacted together. The "ergot poisoning" theory is mostly rejected.
