Getting invited to a HAST or Edutest interview means your child has already made it through the first stage, but the interview can still have a significant impact on the final outcome. For students applying for Years 8–11 entry, this is an important part of the process that is often not discussed in as much detail as the exam itself.
In this video, I break down what schools are looking for during a HAST or Edutest interview, how the interview can affect offers and reserve list positions, and why two students with similar exam results can end up with very different outcomes. I also explain how schools may consider the interview alongside school reports, extracurricular activities and other supporting documentation.
I go through some of the most common HAST and Edutest interview questions students should be prepared for, including why they want to attend the school, what they would do if they received another offer, how they would manage the commute, and questions about extracurricular activities and leadership. This is also applicable for schools who have their own custom exams like Normanhurst or Sydney boys too.
We also look at how students should prepare for a school interview, why practising answers out loud is much more useful than simply thinking about what you might say, and what parents should expect on the day. The goal is not to memorise perfect answers, but to make sure students can communicate clearly and confidently when they are put on the spot. This should only be focused on after the test and supporting documentation has been perfected though.
