A Decade Closed | Mt. Sumagaya to Mt. Lumot Traverse | Misamis Oriental | 4K

A decade closed. While Mt. Sumagaya and Mt. Lumot have remained open as separate climbs, the traverse between them has been closed for nearly ten years. This invitational climb briefly reopened that historic trail, with proceeds supporting the Indigenous Peoples who call these mountains home and consider them sacred ground. By the end of June, the trail will close again, with no word yet on when or if it will reopen. Around 75 hikers, together with 25 guides and locals, took part in this rare traverse. Day 1 started with a steep climb into Mt. Sumagaya’s forest. By sunset, we were at the summit, camping above the clouds with nearby mountain ranges unfolding around us. Day 2 was the heart of the journey. We entered Mt. Lumot’s legendary mossy forest and everything changed. The trail demanded more than walking. We crawled under roots, stepped over tangled branches, balanced on fallen logs, and squeezed our way through thick moss covered passages until we reached camp beside a river. Day 3 was a shorter descent, but the moss stayed with us almost until the very end, before exiting at the memorial site of Cebu Pacific Flight 387. I’ve hiked mossy forests across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, but Mt. Lumot is different. For me, it is the mossiest of them all. Mt. Sumagaya - 2,248 MASL Mt.
