Jesus, I Am Resting

“Jesus, I Am Resting, Resting” was originally written by Irish hymn writer Jean Sophia Pigott in 1876. More than a century later, I was struck by how deeply its words still speak to the tension between striving and resting in who Jesus is. The original hymn centers on a simple but difficult invitation: to look to Jesus, trust His character, and find our rest there. It was also a hymn that missionary Hudson Taylor reportedly found comfort in during seasons of deep grief. For this version, I kept portions of Pigott’s original verses, modernized some of the language, and wrote a new chorus around the truth I kept coming back to: You are steady. You are sovereign. You are faithful. You are good. I can stop my endless striving and rest in who You are. My hope is that this song gives old words a new voice and reminds us that rest isn’t found in finally getting everything under control. It’s found in knowing the One who is already faithful.
