Balchik (Bulgarian: Балчик) is a coastal town and seaside resort on the Black Sea, located in northeastern Bulgaria. It lies in Dobrich Province, approximately 42 km north of Varna. With a population of around 12,000 inhabitants, Balchik is known for its picturesque setting, white limestone cliffs, and historical significance dating back to ancient Thracian and Greek settlements.
The town gained prominence during the early 20th century when it became part of the Kingdom of Romania and was a favored retreat of Queen Marie of Romania. She commissioned the construction of a summer palace and botanical garden, which remain key attractions today. Balchik is also known for its art scene, with the so-called "Balchik School of Painting" inspiring many Romanian and Bulgarian artists.
The Balchik Seafront Promenade is a scenic pedestrian walkway that stretches along the town’s coastline, linking the marina, beaches, restaurants, and key tourist sites such as the Balchik Palace and Botanical Garden. The promenade offers panoramic views of the Black Sea, and is a popular spot for both tourists and locals to stroll, dine, and relax, especially in the evenings.
Lined with palm trees, cafes, art installations, and boutique hotels, the promenade reflects the town's Mediterranean charm and relaxed atmosphere. Seasonal markets, street performers, and cultural events often add vibrancy to the area, making it one of Balchik’s most attractive and lively public spaces.
