Engineering a Mechanism from Scratch Video 6 Segment 5: Performance Assumptions 14 Through 16 Continuation of our series to make a drive mechanism for the New Jersey River Line Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) in O Scale. Thanks to Gary Reighn for developing the model which can be downloaded for 3D printing from his Cult3D site. In this video we develop the build with more assumptions on the topic of performance. Even though our target model is the LRV, the principles and assumptions can be applied to any model requiring a power mechanism. Assumptions 01 Through 16 01 – The Mechanism is Not a Visual Component, But it Dictates the Visual Geometry 02 – Distinguish Between Decorative and Functional Truck Side Frames 03 – Inventory All Drive Mechanism Components Before Designing Any of Them 04 – Determine Whether the Frame is Structural, Cosmetic or Both 05 – Design for Serviceability from the First Sketch 06 – Measure and Document the Available Space Envelope Before Designing Anything 07 – Select the Motor First; Design the Mounting System Around It 08 – Establish the Form Factor from a Documented Source 09 – Design Transmissions for Independent Serviceability 10 – Inventory Materials as Raw Stock Verses Prefabricated Components 11 – Specify Materials by Type, With Mixed Media as the Expected 12 – Account for 3D Print Shrinkage at All Critical Interfaces 13 – Resolve Electrical Isolation Requirements Before Designing Any Conductive Path 14 – Estimate Minimum Tractive Effort Before Selecting the Motor 15 – Calculate Target Gear Ratio from Scale Speed, Not from Intuition 16 – Verify Prototype Truck Compatibility as a predesign Assumption Closing comments and video clips at the end for initial basic testing are included.
