They were small, slow, and not designed for speed—but they were perfect. Meet the British Rail Class 01 shunters, the humble yet heroic locomotives that once ruled the most unlikely railway in the UK: the Holyhead Breakwater Railway. This is the fascinating true story of two unique locomotives—01 001 and 01 002—that worked the windswept 1.48-mile line along the Holyhead Breakwater in Anglesey, Wales. The breakwater itself, completed in 1873, is the longest in the UK, stretching a staggering 1.71 miles (2.75 km) into the Irish Sea. It was built to shield Holyhead Harbour from violent storms, but keeping it in working condition required a railway—and not just any railway. Operating in brutal sea spray, salty air, and on incredibly tight curves with limited space, the Holyhead Breakwater Railway demanded locomotives that were small, nimble, and tough. That’s where the Class 01 diesel-mechanical shunters came in. Built in the 1950s by Andrew Barclay Sons & Co., the Class 01s were originally intended for light industrial and dockyard duties. With only five ever built, they were never common—but two of them found their calling on this breakwater. These 0-4-0 locomotives were perfect for Holyhead’s narrow gauge, steep gradients, and sharp turns. They hauled heavy loads of stone, equipment, and workmen out along the breakwater every day, keeping this crucial maritime structure alive. In this video, we explore: 🚂 The origins and construction of the Holyhead Breakwater Railway 🔧 The technical design and specs of the Class 01 locomotives 🛠️ How these locomotives operated in extreme conditions 📉 The decline of the railway and the tragic scrapping of 01 001 and 01 002 in the early 1980s 🔍 The legacy of these locomotives—and where you can see surviving Class 01s today Despite their obscure status, the Holyhead Class 01s became local legends, much loved by enthusiasts and remembered for their resilience and charm. Though they're gone, their legacy lives on in the hearts of railway fans—and in this video. 🎬 If you're passionate about railway history, forgotten locomotives, and unique engineering stories, this is a video you won't want to miss. 📌 Enjoyed the video?
