The 30-Minute Home Security Checklist Before the Power Goes Out
July 13th, 1977, New York City. Lightning hit a substation at 8:37 pm and by 9:36 the whole city was dark. Before sunrise, 1,600 stores had been broken into and police made 3,700 arrests. Twenty-six years later the same city went dark again, 50 million people this time, and almost nothing happened. You don't get to choose which night you're in. You only get to choose what your house looks like when the streetlights die, and you have about thirty minutes to decide.
I'm Ralph Harmon. Prepping since 2009, four extended outages, longest was nine days. This is the checklist I run every time a storm shows up on the radar, in order, minute by minute, and almost all of it is free.
In this video:
0:00 Two blackouts, two very different nights
Minutes 0-4: Every security device in your house that dies with the wall (and what your smart lock actually does)
Minutes 4-9: Charge and stage, and the phone alarm trick nobody sets
Minutes 9-14: Occupancy, blackout version. Why a lit window on a dark street is a mixed message
Minutes 14-19: Doors, and why the door from the garage is an exterior door tonight
Minutes 19-23: The garage. Your opener was the lock, and the slide lock almost nobody uses
Minutes 23-26: Sliders, windows, and something loud in the way
Minutes 26-29: Fire, candles, generators, and carbon monoxide. The section other channels skip
Minutes 29-30: The room, the code word, the address-first call, and the two neighbors
What thirty minutes cannot do
The three objections I get every time
Your homework: run it as a drill this week
Nothing to sell you in this one. No link, no sponsor. The whole point is that the power is about to go out and the hardware store isn't part of the plan.
Run this tonight and tell me in the comments what you found. Everybody finds something. And tell me what I left off.
Next time: why the four households nearest you are worth more than every lock on this list.
Buy proven, not hyped.
