Sri Lanka Sentences 15 Men to Up to 260 Years | ISH News

Sri Lanka has sentenced 15 men to prison terms ranging from 200 to 260 years for their roles in the 2019 Easter Sunday bombings. Nine other accused were acquitted. The coordinated attacks on churches and hotels on 21 April 2019 killed more than 260 people and injured over 500. The main trial involved 24 accused, 23,270 charges and 2,309 prosecution witnesses. Among those convicted was Mohamed Ibrahim Mohamed Naufer, also known as Naufer Moulavi, whom prosecutors identified as a key figure in supporting the attackers. Separate legal proceedings have also led to death sentences for former police chief Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Ministry Secretary Hemasiri Fernando over their failure to act on intelligence warnings.
