A major opposition protest took place in Delhi on 6 October over Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists. Opposition parties have alleged that the revision could remove eligible voters from the electoral rolls. They have called this “vote chori” and demanded changes to the SIR process. The Election Commission and BJP have rejected these allegations. During the protest, Rahul Gandhi climbed a police barricade while holding the Tricolour before moving to nearby Akashvani Bhavan. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other opposition leaders then held a more than eight-hour sit-in inside the premises. Delhi Police later detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and several other opposition leaders. Police said around 250 people, including about 50 MPs, were detained during the later phase of the protest.
