Navigating My Cargo Ship Under Low Bridges—Then a Little Experiment Made Me So Happy!

My customer let me know that it was time to leave our mooring place and take the cargo ship into a small canal to receive another load of mangrove wood. Along the way, I had to carefully navigate beneath several low bridges and through the narrow canal. After doing this many times, I’m slowly becoming more familiar with handling my cargo ship in these small waterways. When we finally arrived at the wood-loading site, I learned that the workers wouldn’t begin until the following morning. So during the quiet afternoon, I decided to try a little experiment for the first time — growing my own mung bean sprouts aboard the ship using a simple plastic tray. I soaked the mung beans in water, and by midnight I was so curious that I opened them to take a look. Some of the skins had already started splitting, and tiny sprouts were beginning to appear. I was surprisingly excited about something so small. The next morning, a different crew of workers arrived and began loading the mangrove wood. Meanwhile, I changed the water for my mung beans and covered them again so they could continue growing. Around lunchtime, I prepared another simple meal aboard the ship: small shrimp cooked in a sweet and savory sauce, served with white rice, vegetables, and watermelon. In the afternoon, the workers finished for the day and began their journey home, about 50 km away. They traveled by a small speedboat powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine. Later, I changed the water for my mung beans for the second time. This time, I could already see beautiful little white sprouts pushing their way out of the green skins. Seeing them grow so quickly made me genuinely happy. Now I just need to be patient for another two days before they are ready to harvest. Life aboard a cargo ship is mostly about navigating rivers, carrying cargo, and working long days.
