★ There's a story about a picó operator outside Barranquilla who kept a macaw in the room where he built his mixes. Nobody planned this - the bird came with the house. But macaws learn what they hear most, and what that bird heard most was delay. Not the melody, not the vocal, just the tail end of everything: the echo repeating itself into nothing, over and over, all night, for years. Eventually it stopped mimicking the songs entirely and started mimicking the decay. It would answer his echoes with its own, one beat behind, dry and nasal, and it always landed in time. He gave up trying to record around it. The tapes that circulated from that room have the bird on them, low in the mix, chanting back at the delay like a second engineer who never asked to be hired. People who bought them at the market said you could always tell his work apart, though most assumed the sound was a broken spring reverb. That's the feeling this set is after. Warm tape, dubwise dropouts that pull the floor out and put it back, roots underneath, echo on top.
