By now, Sally and Lloyd Davies are the only two people left in the Connections Bar. Davies wipes down the counter, glances toward the back of the building, then casually asks Sally to keep an eye on the place for a minute. He has something to take care of in the back. Sally gives him a slight nod. Nothing more. She watches Davies disappear through the doorway behind the bar. His footsteps recede down the corridor. Sally remains exactly where she is. She waits. Her eyes drift toward the empty entrance, then toward the doorway Davies has just passed through. The bar suddenly feels different without the customers—the music lower, the empty glasses and chairs casting long shadows beneath the dim lights. She listens. Davies' footsteps grow fainter. Then disappear completely. Only now does Sally move. Slowly, she turns on her stool and reaches for the black leather handbag beside her. She places it on the counter and opens it without taking her eyes off the passage leading to the back. Her gloved hand disappears inside. A moment later, the compact shape of a Colt M1903 emerges from the bag. A suppressor has already been fitted to the barrel. Sally lowers her eyes to the pistol. Her movements are calm and economical. She checks the weapon and ammunition, chambers a round, then pauses for half a second, listening again. Nothing. Davies still hasn't returned. Sally slips the pistol into the side pocket of her black trench coat. The weapon disappears beneath the heavy fabric as naturally as though the pocket had been made for it. She closes the handbag. Then she waits again. Five seconds. Ten. Her gaze remains fixed on the dark doorway at the rear of the bar. Finally, Sally rises. She adjusts the front of her trench coat with both gloved hands and takes her handbag. The brim of her black fedora leaves the upper half of her face partly in shadow. She starts toward the back. At first, her pace is casual. Then the main barroom disappears behind her. The route to the back office twists through a series of narrow passages and service areas. Sally moves through them without rushing, slowing slightly at every corner before continuing. The noise of the street is gone now. So is the music. With every turn, the bar seems quieter. Her handbag hangs naturally at her side. Her other hand stays close to the pocket of her trench coat where the Colt is concealed. Another corner. Another narrow passage. Then Sally sees light spilling from an open doorway ahead. She stops. Listens. A faint sound comes from inside. Sally takes the last few steps toward the doorway. She reaches the back office. And there, unaware that she has followed him, is Lloyd Davies. Alone. Hitwoman, gloved woman, silncer gun, fedora hat, trench coat
