Albert Forster was one of the most ruthless Nazi officials responsible for shaping the terror of German occupation in Poland during World War II. As Gauleiter of Danzig–West Prussia, Forster oversaw some of the earliest and most brutal policies of the Holocaust in Poland, turning the region into a laboratory of ethnic cleansing, mass murder, and forced Germanisation. His rise within the Nazi Party was rapid—supported by figures like Julius Streicher and Heinrich Himmler, he became a loyal servant of Adolf Hitler long before the war began. After the German invasion of Poland on 1 September 1939, Forster implemented policies that targeted Jews, Poles, clergy, and members of the intelligentsia. Under his command, SS units, Selbstschutz formations, and Gestapo officers carried out mass executions, deportations, and systematic terror. One of the most horrific atrocities linked to Forster was the Piaśnica massacre, where between 12,000 and 16,000 civilians—including Jews, Poles, Czechs, Kashubians, and German dissidents—were murdered. Forster openly declared that Poles and Jews “must be eliminated,” and by November 1939, he proudly reported that his territory was Judenfrei—“free of Jews.” Unlike other Nazi leaders, Forster pursued a large-scale Germanisation campaign, classifying tens of thousands of Poles as “racially suitable.” This brought him into conflict with Himmler and other high-ranking Nazis, yet he enjoyed Hitler’s personal protection throughout the war. Still, the repression in his region remained severe: tens of thousands were murdered, expelled, or deported to concentration camps. Captured by British forces in 1945, Forster was extradited to Poland, where he stood before the Polish Supreme National Tribunal. Found guilty of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, he was sentenced to death and executed in Warsaw on 28 February 1952.
