The Bay Trail, officially established in 1987, is an ambitious vision—a 500-mile walking and cycling route designed to encircle both the San Francisco and San Pablo Bays. Spanning nine counties, 47 cities, and seven toll bridges, the trail continues to grow, with more than 350 miles already completed and open to the public. For this ride, we set out on a 30-mile round trip with a modest 438 feet of elevation gain. While the majority of the journey followed dedicated paths, there were roughly three miles where we shared the road with vehicle traffic, requiring a bit more awareness and caution. We began at Shoreline Lake in Mountain View, rolling onto smooth, well-marked paths that carried us through Palo Alto and toward the expansive stretch of the Dumbarton Bridge. Crossing the bridge offered sweeping bay views, with the wind adding both challenge and reward to the ride. On the other side, the landscape shifted as we entered Coyote Hills Regional Park in Fremont, where marshlands and open spaces replaced the urban backdrop. The trail itself was consistently well maintained, primarily paved with occasional gravel sections that added a bit of texture to the ride without slowing us down. Overall, it was a scenic and enjoyable route—one that blends shoreline beauty, urban connection, and a touch of adventure into a single ride.
