Emley Moor Tower: 330 metres of concrete on a Yorkshire hillside, the tallest free standing structure in the United Kingdom. It weighs 11,200 tonnes with its foundations, has a wall 533 millimetres thick at the base and 350 at the top, tapers from 24.4 metres in diameter to 6.5, and sits on foundations 6.1 metres deep. Every one of those numbers exists because the guyed mast that stood there before it came down on 19 March 1969, in a wind that was not a storm. Nobody was killed. This documentary covers the full engineering and construction process, from what a guyed mast actually does and why ice changes the structure the designer analysed, to vortex shedding and the reason a slender structure can survive gales for years and then destroy itself in a light steady breeze at exactly the wrong speed, the mass and damping that make concrete far less susceptible to it, the taper that gives the tower a different shedding frequency at every height, the slipform that pours a wall with no horizontal joints and cannot be allowed to stop, and the overturning moment that decides the width of the base. Why the first explanation for the collapse was wrong. Why height on a tower gets more expensive per metre as it rises.
