We Found a Forgotten Railway Through the B.C. Mountains | C&W Rail Trail

The C&W Rail Trail is one of British Columbia's most incredible pieces of railway history — and we're taking the 4x4 into the backcountry to explore it. Join Mud Sheriff Overlanding as we travel along the historic Columbia & Western Railway, exploring the rugged route between Grand Forks and Castlegar, British Columbia. What was once a working railway through some of the most difficult terrain in the Kootenays is now a remote trail filled with historic trestles, railway tunnels, abandoned structures, old railway grades and incredible mountain scenery. Along the way, we'll check out some of the fascinating remnants left behind by the railway builders, including the historic Bulldog Tunnel, one of the most impressive features on the trail. At approximately 912 metres long, Bulldog Tunnel cuts through the mountain and remains one of the defining landmarks of the C&W Rail Trail. We'll also explore the old railway infrastructure and hidden remnants of the past while taking in the incredible scenery of the West Kootenays, Monashee Mountains and Lower Arrow Lake. The Columbia & Western Railway was constructed during the massive railway expansion of the late 1800s, helping connect the mining communities and resources of the Boundary and Kootenay regions. The original rail corridor eventually became part of today's recreational rail-trail system.
