We’ve visited this area many times before, but when we slowed down and took the time to explore it on foot, we discovered scenery and experiences we had never noticed before. We stroll along the approach to the temple while enjoying views of Lake Hamana, then visit Kanzanji Temple, a historic temple with more than 1,200 years of history. Along Kanzanji Monzen Street, we stop by HAMANAKO ENGINE, where we discover something rather unusual: “Unagi Sauce Milk Ice Cream.” Milk ice cream topped with sauce normally used for grilled eel. What could that possibly taste like? Next, we visit Kanzanjien, a long-established restaurant founded in 1957. Overlooking beautiful Lake Hamana, we enjoy a delicious unaju — grilled eel glazed with a savory-sweet sauce and served over rice. We thought we already knew Kanzanji. But the breeze across the lake, the scenery along the temple approach, and the flavors we discovered reminded us that there is always something new waiting close to home. You don’t need to do anything extraordinary to have a wonderful day. Sometimes, a special moment is waiting just around the corner.
