Morissette Amon takes on “Defying Gravity” from Wicked, and this is one of those songs where making it look easy might be the most impressive part. This song is brutally demanding. It lives high in the voice for extended periods, requires a powerful and well-coordinated upper mix and belt, and keeps asking for more as the performance builds. By the time you reach the biggest moments of the song, the singer has already accumulated a significant amount of vocal fatigue. That means breath pressure, vowel shaping, resonance, and register coordination all have to stay incredibly disciplined. You cannot simply push more chest voice upward and hope for the best. And Morissette somehow continues to look relaxed while producing this huge, dense sound. I also really enjoyed the slightly more spacious feel of this arrangement. Pulling the tempo back gives her more room inside the phrases, but it can also expose the voice even more because there is nowhere to hide. She continues to make extraordinarily difficult singing look effortless. What Morissette performance should I hear next?
