Matthew 9:36 — “When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
Mark 1:41 — Leper: “Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him.” He touched the untouchable.
Jesus never ministered from duty. He ministered from compassion.
2. 5 Ways Jesus Showed Compassion
1. He Saw What Others Missed
Matthew 9:36 — He SAW the crowd.
Others saw a problem, a burden. Jesus saw sheep without a shepherd. Compassion begins with seeing.
2. He Touched The Untouchable
Mark 1:41 — Leper
John 8:11 — Adulterous woman: “Neither do I condemn you”
Luke 7:13-14 — Widow of Nain: He touched the coffin, stopped the funeral.
The law said don’t touch. Compassion said you must.
3. He Fed The Hungry
Matthew 14:14 & 15:32 — Two feeding miracles start the same: “He had compassion...”
He cares about your spiritual need AND your physical need. Matthew 6:33
4. He Healed The Broken
Matthew 14:14 — “...he had compassion on them and healed their sick.”
Compassion always moves to action. It doesn’t just pray, it does.
5. He Wept With The Weeping
John 11:33-35 — At Lazarus’ tomb: “Jesus wept.” Even though He knew He’d raise him.
Hebrews 4:15 — “We do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize”
He doesn’t just fix your pain. He feels it with you.
3. The Mystery Behind It
Compassion = Throne → Street.
Psalm 103:13 — “As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him.”
The Judge of all the earth became a Man of tears to become our Mercy Seat.
Why is this powerful?
Mercy forgives what you did.
Grace gives what you don’t deserve.
Compassion heals what broke you.
Lamentations 3:22-23 — “His compassions never fail. They are new every morning.” Every day, fresh supply.
4. The Compassion That Saved You
Matthew 20:34 — Two blind men cry: “And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight.”
Luke 19:10 — “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Compassion left heaven.
The cross is the ultimate act of compassion.
1 Peter 2:24 — He took your sin, sickness, shame, because He couldn’t stand to watch you die in it.
5. How To Walk In His Compassion Today
1. Receive it first: Stop condemning yourself.
Romans 8:1 — “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”
2. Ask God for His eyes:
Psalm 119:136 — Pray: “Lord give me Your compassion for people, not judgment.”
3. Move with it:
1 John 3:18 — “...not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.”
Text someone. Visit someone. Feed someone. Touch someone.
Your miracle is often hidden in someone else’s need.
