What It's Like to Be a Foreigner in Japan: The Good, the Bad, and the Beautiful

I’m a foreigner living in Japan, and sometimes, being far from home can make you feel like you don’t quite belong. But there are also moments that remind me that kindness has no nationality. In this video, I was invited by some Japanese friends to spend a summer day by the sea. What started with a new pair of swimming fins turned into a beautiful day of SUP, clear water, underwater fish, a peaceful sunset, and finally, a relaxing visit to Kinosaki Onsen. I’m still learning to swim, so trying SUP for the first time was definitely a challenge. 😅 But what I enjoyed most wasn’t just being on the water. It was being surrounded by people who made me feel included. My Japanese isn’t perfect. Sometimes I don’t understand everything they’re talking about, but they still talk to me, include me in their conversations, and never make me feel like I’m different simply because I’m from another country. Lately, staying in Japan as a foreigner feels more challenging than it used to. That makes these little moments even more meaningful to me. I don’t know what my future in Japan will look like. So for now, I just want to treasure these moments.
