In 1752 a Bourbon tunnel under the town of Resina broke into a Roman villa and found a small room stacked with black lumps. Everyone on site agreed they were charcoal. They were books — more than eighteen hundred of them, rolled shut and cooked solid by Vesuvius.
For the next two hundred and seventy-five years the only reliable way to read one was to destroy it. Camillo Paderni cut them in half lengthways and copied whatever the exposed surface showed. Father Antonio Piaggio built a machine that peeled a roll open at a rate measured in millimetres a day; the first one took him four years. By the middle of the twentieth century 585 had been unrolled and around 200 of those had ever been published.
In June 2026 a scroll was read from one end to the other without being opened at all. This film is about the 275 years in between — why the material survived at all, what the library actually contains (mostly one Epicurean philosopher, and no lost plays), why carbon ink on a carbonised page is invisible to an X-ray scan, and what changed when a competition put the scans online and a student read a single word: purple.
It also separates three things the announcement merged: the scroll that was read in full, the scroll that gave up seventy columns, and the scroll that carried a title page. And it says plainly what the researchers say — that "complete" does not mean unbroken, and that the attribution of the text is still open.

Every image in this film was generated or drawn for it. Nothing here is a photograph of the villa, of a scroll or of any real object, and no image shows human remains. All images carry a permanent AI label and the official EU marking appears in full at the start.
