On the Italian coast there is a block of concrete that has stood in the sea for two thousand years. No steel inside it. No maintenance. Concrete poured into the same water in the twentieth century is already being repaired. The usual explanation is volcanic ash, and the usual explanation is true — and explains almost nothing. The thing that actually does the work had been sitting in plain view the whole time: the small white lumps scattered through Roman mortar, which were read as careless mixing for most of a century, and which turn out to be a repair system that has never stopped running. This film is about how that repair works, about what seawater does to Roman concrete that it does not do to ours, and about the three things almost everyone gets wrong about the material. The recipe was never lost. It has been reproduced. It is not better than modern concrete. The real difference is steel — and steel is also the clock. What is still open is the smallest question in the story: whether the Romans knew.
