I have a job interview this week and it is the first one I have had since I left corporate to start my own business. I was nervous and I was rusty, and I used AI to get ready. Not to write my answers for me. To get clear on what the job actually is before I ever pick up the phone.

Here is the honest version. The last time I sat a job interview, there was nothing that could test my own stories back at me. Now there is, and almost nobody uses it for the part that actually matters. Most people open a chat and ask for interview questions and answers to memorize, which is exactly the version that makes you sound rehearsed and fake on the call. What I did instead was use it to build my own point of view about the job.
It started on a dog walk. I walk my dog every day like clockwork, so that is where I did the thinking out loud. What do I want answers to on day one. Who are the people I need to influence. What tools does this team use. How big is the team. Do they travel. What are the peak seasons of work. I was preparing questions as if it were already my first day, not as if I were auditioning.
Then I screenshotted the role into Claude on my phone and asked it to explain the job to me plainly, then pushed further. Why do you think this role is open. What are they actually looking for. If I already had the offer, what does week one look like, and what have I delivered by the end of it. I am applying to senior roles, which means there is no training and no ramp, so walking in with a plan matters more than sounding polished.
After that I took the transcript of that whole conversation, plus the work example documents I have been writing for months and the pile of tailored resumes I already had, and I put all of it into Claude Code. I asked it to build me a two page prep document. Then I had it quiz me like a recruiter so I could rehearse out loud instead of reading.
I also get into where I think the line is. Plenty of companies say do not use AI at all in a hiring process. Using AI to get clearer about your own real experience is a different thing from using it to sound like someone you are not. I say which side of that I land on and why I am willing to say it out loud.
