Thought My Gold Turned to Silver

I headed back to an old claim that had already produced about a gram of gold, hoping there was still more left to find. While panning, I noticed tiny drops of quicksilver (mercury) moving around the pan. As I kept swirling the water, the mercury collected onto one nice piece of gold until it looked like it had turned silver. I pulled the piece out to put it in its own vial... ...and I dropped it. I searched the ground around camp, but I never found it again. The rest of the trip didn't get much easier. The bees were relentless, my battery bank was nearly drained after several cloudy days, and I eventually had to head into town before returning to the mountains to keep chasing gold.
