Ask anyone who the first person in history was to have their name written down and they'll guess a king, a pharaoh, a conqueror. They're wrong. The oldest name we can actually read belongs to someone far more ordinary, and the reason it survived is hilarious.
In this video: where and when writing was invented, and why it wasn't for stories, laws, or praising rulers... what the very first clay tablets were really used for (hint: it involves grain, counting, and someone checking the numbers)... the name that appears on those tablets, and what we know about the person behind it... why historians still argue over whether it's a personal name or a job title... and why the first words humans ever wrote down were not words at all, but receipts.
Then the twist that changes how you see every great civilization: before writing could record a single king, it had to record a single debt. The most powerful technology humans ever invented began as an accountant's problem.
Five thousand years later, you're still doing exactly what he did: keeping track of what you owe and what you're owed. Some things never changed.
💬 Before you watch, guess in the comments what the first thing ever written down was. Then come back and tell me if you were right.
