A slow-moving nor’easter is driving coastal flooding, dangerous surf and strong northeast winds from North Carolina to New Jersey on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Although the storm remains far offshore, persistent winds are pushing seawater toward the shoreline, causing repeated flooding around high tide. Forecasters warn that Wednesday evening could bring the most concerning round, with minor to locally moderate coastal flooding possible across vulnerable communities.
The Outer Banks of North Carolina are facing renewed threats to Highway 12, the vital route connecting Hatteras Island to the mainland. Farther north, coastal flood advisories cover parts of Delaware and New Jersey, where rising water could affect inland bays, low-lying neighborhoods, roads and parking areas. Strong winds and rough seas are also creating dangerous conditions for boaters and swimmers along a vast stretch of the East Coast.
In this video, we examine why the nor’easter is lingering offshore, how repeated high tides could worsen coastal flooding, and why dangerous surf and rip currents threaten beaches from Florida to New England. We also look at the storm’s possible transition to a subtropical system over the Gulf Stream, which could give it the name Josephine if it develops the necessary characteristics.
The storm is expected to track north toward Massachusetts later in the week, with rough seas and elevated tides continuing as it moves. A cold front may eventually carry it out to sea between Thursday and Friday, but forecast timing remains uncertain. Residents should monitor official advisories, avoid flooded roads and stay out of dangerous surf.
