Why does spaghetti break into 3 pieces instead of 2? Try snapping one dry stick in half and you'll almost always get extra pieces, plus a little pasta shrapnel on the floor.
Spaghetti breaking turns out to be a real physics puzzle. Even Richard Feynman spent an evening snapping spaghetti and couldn't explain it. The answer hides in what happens a few thousandths of a second after the first crack.
In this DAXO case file, we look at why spaghetti breaks the way it does, how the first break can cause the next one, and the twisting trick that researchers found usually gives you just two pieces. (Usually, not always. Your kitchen may vary.)
How we show it: scenes marked "OUR SIMULATION" use our own calculation for a bending rod. Clay scenes are illustrations of the published experiments credited below.
If you like everyday mysteries with real science behind them, subscribe. There are plenty more in the file.
