An emotional farewell ceremony for former Rwanda Defence Force officer Colonel Tom Byabagamba has drawn widespread public attention after members of his family gathered to honour his life and memory. One of the most heartbreaking moments came when Byabagamba’s sister broke down in tears while speaking about her brother. Her visible grief reflected the pain of a family mourning a man who died in custody after spending nearly 12 years in prison. Tom Byabagamba, 59, was once a senior military officer and commander of Rwanda’s Presidential Guard. He had also served in President Paul Kagame’s personal protection detail before later holding other responsibilities within the military. He was arrested in August 2014 and prosecuted alongside retired Brigadier General Frank Rusagara and retired Sergeant François Kabayiza. In 2016, a military court convicted Byabagamba of several offences and sentenced him to 21 years in prison. The Court of Appeal upheld his conviction in 2019 but reduced the sentence to 15 years. His death was announced by his elder brother, David Himbara, on August 25, 2026.
