Qualcomm bought the company behind Mojo, then gave the language away free. Is Mojo really 35,000x faster than Python? Explained with zero code. Mojo is a programming language made by Modular, the company co-founded by Chris Lattner (creator of Swift, co-creator of MLIR) and Tim Davis. In this video I explain what Mojo does in plain language, using everyday examples instead of code: compilers, MLIR, SIMD, CPUs and GPUs, memory ownership, and how Mojo works alongside Python. Then the business story. Qualcomm agreed to acquire Modular in June 2026 and closed the deal on July 29, 2026, in an all-stock deal Bloomberg valued at about $3.9 billion. Mojo 1.0 came out on August 11, 2026, and at ModCon in August the entire language was open-sourced under Apache 2.0. I also look at the famous 35,000x number, which was Modular's claim on one math benchmark against plain Python.
