The trees are changing again... Another year slips through my hands. And I watch the world turn gold While I stand here where you left me. The first cold breath of October Cuts deeper than it did before Golden memories hit the ground Like the leaves outside our door I watch the branches surrender To a season they can't outrun And I wonder how the world keeps turning When your seasons were never done They say everything has its time That every flame must fade But who decided yours was over? Who decided you couldn't stay? YOU SHOULD HAVE SEEN ANOTHER AUTUMN! Felt the cold and watched the colors die You should have had a thousand mornings A thousand sunsets in your eyes And I'll keep counting every season Every leaf that hits the ground The world gets another springtime But you're not coming back around The branches bend beneath the weight Of everything they have to lose But they'll awaken when the winter breaks While I am left with nothing new The years keep carving through the bark The rings reveal the time they've known But what of all the lives cut short? You should have watched the children grow You should have felt another summer Seen a thousand things we'll never know And I'll keep counting every season Every star that lights the sky The trees will wear their green again But I'll never understand why The leaves will fall...
