Why is Japanese calligraphy at a rakugo theater written to fill every inch? Tachibana Satsuki, a yose-moji calligrapher of the Tachibana school, explains the lettering of Japan's storytelling halls. Yose-moji is the brush lettering used on playbills and signboards at yose, the traditional theaters for rakugo, kōdan, and manzai. It grew out of the Edo-period signboard scripts for yose, sumō, and kabuki, which blended the official Oie-ryū hand with standard script, and it was shaped above all by kabuki's Kantei-ryū. Characters are written thick and dark, slanting upward and filling the frame with as little white space as possible, a wish for a packed house. The older "bira-ji" was systematized by Tachibana Ukon, and today the Tachibana school is the only school of yose-moji. ▶ Ep.2 | From a Rakugo Festival to the Tachibana School → Coming Soon — Wed, November 4 at 10pm JST ▶ Ep.3 | Writing Yose-moji by Hand in Tokyo → Coming Soon — Fri, November 6 at 10pm JST 🎬 See the full series →    • Tachibana Satsuki | Yose-moji, the Brush L...   🎬 Exclusive | Behind the Scenes → Coming Soon 📖 Read the Interview → Coming Soon Pick up the brush and write yose-moji with Tachibana Satsuki in Tokyo. ✨ Explore private cultural experiences → www.bespoke-discovery.com ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ About Bespoke Discovery ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Bespoke Discovery invites you into the hidden world of Japan's most extraordinary artisans, traditions, and cultural experiences — rarely seen, never forgotten. 🌐 www.bespoke-discovery.com 📍 Based in Japan | Serving discerning travelers worldwide #JapaneseCalligraphy #YoseMoji #Rakugo #Shodo #Calligraphy #EdoCulture #Kabuki #JapaneseCulture #Tokyo #TraditionalCrafts #HiddenJapan #BespokeDiscovery
