Where does Noh theater begin? Sakurama Ujin, 21st-generation head of the Sakurama house, traces 700 years of Noh back to Prince Shōtoku's time.
Noh, Japan's theater of song, dance, and word, was brought to completion some 700 years ago by Kan'ami and his son Zeami. Zeami's writings place its origin around the year 600, when Hata no Kawakatsu, at Prince Shōtoku's command, offered performing arts to the people. The Konparu school honours Hata no Kawakatsu as its founder. Sakurama Ujin, a shite-kata Noh performer of the Konparu school, tells how the Sakurama house led a troupe of performers revived under Katō Kiyomasa, served the Hosokawa lords in Higo, present-day Kumamoto, until the Meiji Restoration, and later carried Noh abroad, beginning with a film of Aoi no Ue made in English, German, and Italian.
