Russell Bufalino (1903-1994) led the Northeastern Pennsylvania crime family for decades and is widely regarded as one of the most influential and least publicised Mafia bosses in American history. Born in Sicily and raised in the United States, he attended the 1957 Apalachin meeting, built a power base in Pittston and Scranton, and held influence in labor circles, including the Teamsters, that reached well beyond his region.
Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman" (2019) portrayed him through the eyes of Frank Sheeran, but the film is an adaptation of Sheeran's disputed account. This video examines what is documented about Bufalino's real role, his organization, his relationships with other crime families and union figures, his legal history, and how his actual standing compares to his depiction on screen.
