In November 1944, a young wife in Ohio writes to her husband somewhere in Europe. She doesn't know where he is. The Army won't say, and neither will he. Even the post office doesn't know. And yet, about two weeks later, her letter is in his hands, in a foxhole in a snowy forest 4,000 miles away. In this animated history we follow one letter the whole way: the APO address with no place in it, V-Mail (the letter that became a photograph on 16mm film), the strict Christmas package rules, the long chase after a soldier who kept moving, the censor who read his reply, and the 855 women of the 6888th who cleared 17 million undelivered letters in three months. Margaret and Joe are an illustrative couple. The rules, numbers, names and quotes are real and sourced below.
