A broken saddle brings me to Kyoto, but what I find there makes me glad my plans changed.
The 55 km ride from Kyotamba starts with rain that refuses to stop, an empty stomach, and a wet phone that makes navigation a struggle. With one saddle rail already broken, I'm hoping to reach Kyoto and find a replacement before the other one gives way.
Cherry blossoms brighten the roadside, but steep climbs and busy traffic make getting into the city anything but relaxing. After finding my hotel, I head out in search of a bike shop.
The next morning brings sunshine and a completely different side of the journey. I explore Nijo Castle, Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, and the Kyoto Imperial Palace grounds, discovering peaceful paths, beautiful sakura, and gardens that leave me almost speechless. I expected crowds, but found some surprisingly quiet places.
Sometimes a mechanical problem takes you somewhere you're very glad you didn't miss.
