The Aleppo Codex was the Bible Maimonides trusted most. Its Shema verse is missing. We open the file. Around 930, a scribe in Tiberias copied what became the most authoritative Hebrew Bible in history. Maimonides endorsed it. For six centuries it sat in an iron chest in Aleppo. After riots in 1947, nearly two leaves in five were gone. The Torah page carrying the Shema, Deuteronomy 6:4, is among them. This case file traces the Aleppo Codex from its scribe Aaron ben Asher to the Leningrad Codex and Codex Sassoon, and asks what we lost.
