Why do Alocasias keep losing leaves, suddenly collapse or attract endless spider mites? 😩 And why, despite all the frustration, do we keep buying more of them?!
Welcome to the Alocasia Support Group! 🌿
If you've ever watched your Alocasia grow a beautiful new leaf, only to lose an older one almost immediately, you're definitely not alone. And if you've ever had an apparently healthy Alocasia suddenly fall apart for no obvious reason, you'll know exactly why this support group is necessary!
In this video, I'm having a slightly tongue-in-cheek but genuinely useful conversation about the joys, frustrations and downright confusing behaviour of Alocasia houseplants.
After years of growing tropical houseplants, I've learned that Alocasias aren't always as straightforward as we'd like. But here's the interesting part: sometimes the things we interpret as problems aren't necessarily signs that we're doing something wrong.
I'm exploring some of the most common Alocasia struggles, including:
🌿 Losing leaves: Why some Alocasias seem determined to keep only one, two or three leaves, and why older leaves dying isn't automatically a disaster.
😱 Sudden collapse: Why an Alocasia that looked perfectly healthy yesterday might suddenly deteriorate, and how its underground storage organs can sometimes hide problems until much later.
🕷️ Spider mites: Why these pests seem to love certain Alocasias, how I manage them and why preventative biological controls have made such a difference for me.
🌱 Roots, corms and propagation: The frustrations of stubborn corms, disappearing roots and transitioning Alocasias between different growing substrates.
❄️ Winter struggles: What happens when temperatures and light levels drop, why some Alocasias stop growing and why apparent dormancy isn't always what it seems.
💚 Why we keep buying them: Despite all the grief, there's something irresistible about those extraordinary leaves!
Along the way, I'm sharing my experiences with different Alocasia varieties, including some of the plants that have tested my patience, and the approaches that have worked in my own growing environment.
This isn't about pretending every Alocasia behaves the same way or that there's one perfect care routine. It's about understanding what these plants might actually be telling us before we start interfering and potentially making things worse.
💬 YOUR TURN!
Consider the comments your very own Alocasia Support Group.
What's your biggest Alocasia struggle? Is it spider mites, losing leaves, root rot, winter decline or a particular variety that seems determined to drive you mad?
And more importantly, what have you discovered that actually works?
Share your experiences below. I'd love this comment section to become somewhere Alocasia owners can compare notes, exchange advice and occasionally have a good moan together!
